High-tech Hanukkah:Mobile menorahs represent growing automotive trend

By Peter Kenter,  National Post  Published: Friday, December 14, 2007

Once a symbol seen only on a rabbi's vehicle, mobile menorahs are experiencing widespread popularity in car menorah parades in the United States, Canada and around the world. "The original car-top menorahs were large and heavy and scratched the roof," says Nochum Goldshmidt, CEO of the U.S. company Carmenorah.com. "If you drove into a parking garage with low clearance, the menorah would fall backward and break the rear window." Goldshmidt's improved design features a lower profile and lightweight aluminum construction. A recently developed energy-efficient model, customized with LED bulbs, sheds light in all directions, spreading the light of Hanukkah in 21st-century style. "It's taken off like wildfire," says Goldshmidt. "We tell people that they can park and leave the lights on for all eight days of Hanukkah, and their engines will still start up when they're ready to drive."
